Gringo Warrior Rebuild

After most conferences where Gringo Warrior makes an appearance i like to strip the locks down and re-pin them, both for the purpose of making sure that the challenge is new and varied for the next appearance but also because even at small events the springs take a bit of punishement and the key pins get rather scratched up. However, in addition to this routine maintenance, about once a year i scrap the entire set of hardware and put in entirely fresh equipment all-around. The dents, dings, and overall abuse does add up, and it feels good to rebuild everything once in a while from the ground up. This latest rebuild took place just prior to my trip out to Vegas for DEFCON 17.

Packages of new hardware fresh from the store. Tearing down some of the old doorknobs.

This time around, i saved all of the key pins and kept them separate and labeled. I sent them off to datagram for him to do some lockpicking forensics. I'm curious to see what shape they were in after the last couple cons.

On this rebuild, i even replaced all the wafer locks in the "filing cabinet" and "car door" stages.

I had the "hard" doorknob repinned and installed... that's the hardest one, what with the extra security features.

So fresh and spiffy, this stage is all completed now.

Doorknobs and deadbolts are done... just the wafer locks remain.

I'd been saving up old pieces for about two and a half years now. I finally got to the scrap yard with all this stuff just the other day.

Along with about 100 lbs of computer cases and a massive UPS unit, i wound up getting $12 for light iron, $7 for brass, and $24 for copper (most of which was type #1, but there were some pieces thick enough to be #2). I suppose it was worth it.

A closer look at some of the driver pins used in Gringo Warrior now. Notice the interesting security types that get incorporated into the "hard" stage at key points.

The last step... coloring the keys to the course so they don't get mixed in with other TOOOL equipment at cons.

Did you come and play Gringo Warrior at DEFCON 17? I hope the hardware worked well for you and you had fun! How did your score compare with others that day?
