The
traveling terabyte is a project of the hacker community
that began in the summer of 2006. Initially conceived as
an attempt to bring informational content to friends and
associates who couldn't attend DefCon
14 due to their being deployed in uniform or assigned
to government contracting details overseas, the project
has grown substantially and now touches the lives of numerous
servicemen and women, bringing some of the comforts of home
to those who find themselves in foreign lands without reliable
links to their friends and families.
From
a technical standpoint, the project consists of outfitting
very large hard drives and flash drives capable of operating
in a wide range of environments. These drives are then secured
in damage-resistant packaging, filled with entertaining
content, and circulated among the men and women of the United
States Armed Forces.
The
original concept and design of the first traveling terabyte
was the work of Deviant
Ollam, however shortly after his first mention of this
idea on the DefCon Forums,
many other prominent members of the hacker community volunteered
their own time, effort, skills, and resources to bring the
project to fruition. Certain individuals whose contributions
were particularly noteworthy were DaKahuna, Thorn, AST,
theprez, renderman, and Jason Blackwell.
